Schoolyards to the Chesapeake Bay: Integrating Environmental Literacy through the Howard County Public Schools Gifted and Talented Curriculum
This course is designed for gifted and talented teachers, but is open to all HCPS teachers interested in the topic.

Come explore the Chesapeake Bay Watershed from Tangier Island, VA to Howard County, MD. We will investigate the connections between local schoolyards and the Chesapeake Bay through field-based education rooted in the Howard County gifted and talented curriculum. During this course we will go on the water, through the woods, over the fields, onto schoolyards, and into classrooms.

Length & Location: Five consecutive days: First three days at the Port Isobel Environmental Education Center for a 3-day, 2-night dormitory-style experience; fourth day synchronous online learning day; fifth day field-based, whole-group, outdoor investigation in Howard County.
Cost: $150
Credit: Successful completion of course and final project will qualify Maryland teachers to receive 3 MSDE Continuing Professional Development Credits (#21-66-01R). Orientation Date: Virtual orientation meetings are at 7:00 p.m. on May 25th, June 22nd, or July 13th. Choose one of the virtual meetings prior to your course.

COVID Policy: All participants of multi-day experiences are required to be fully up to date on COVID vaccinations or have a negative PCR test within 72 hours of in person programing start. All vaccinated participants are required to take a rapid covid test 48 Hours prior to the start of in person programing. Attend only if negative.
